RS485LN RS485/Modbus to LoRaWAN Tranceiver

Dragino RS485-LN RS485 / Modbus to LoRaWAN Interface

The Dragino RS485-LN is a LoRaWAN interface designed to connect RS485 and Modbus-based sensors to long-range wireless networks. It supports scheduled polling of connected devices, allowing data to be collected, processed, and transmitted at defined intervals with low power consumption.

The device features an optically isolated RS485 transceiver and a wide 7–24V DC input range, making it suitable for a broad range of industrial, environmental, and monitoring applications. Up to 16 custom command sets can be configured via the USB programming port, with sensor responses transmitted either individually or combined into a single uplink.

Dragino RS485-LN RS485 / Modbus to LoRaWAN Interface

The Dragino RS485-LN is a low-power RS485 to LoRaWAN interface designed to connect Modbus and RS485-based sensors to LoRaWAN networks for scheduled data collection and remote monitoring. It operates on a configurable time schedule, waking at defined intervals to execute user-defined command sequences, process sensor responses, and transmit data records wirelessly.

Configurable Command Scheduling The RS485-LN supports up to 16 programmable command sets per cycle. Each command can include a configurable delay, allowing time for connected sensors to respond before moving to the next request. Users can define how response bytes are parsed and whether results are sent as individual uplinks or merged into a single data record.

Remote and Local Configuration Device configuration can be updated remotely using downlink commands to modify polling commands, delays, and response handling. For validation and advanced configuration, the RS485-LN also supports local setup via its programming port using AT commands. This interface can additionally be used for firmware upgrades through the built-in bootloader.

Always-On Class-C Operation By default, the RS485-LN operates in LoRaWAN Class-C mode, remaining continuously available to receive downlink commands. This allows on-demand polling, configuration changes, and control actions without waiting for scheduled uplinks, making it suitable for applications requiring near-real-time interaction.

Practical Field Deployment The device enclosure includes a terminal block for straightforward RS485 wiring, a reset button, and status LED indicators for device and network activity. The flanged enclosure supports wall mounting, with optional magnetic mounting hardware available for flexible installation.

Proven Telemetry2U Integration Telemetry2U has successfully deployed the RS485-LN with a range of third-party instruments, including In-Situ water quality sensors. A live demonstration shows an In-Situ AquaTROLL 500 connected via RS485-LN sending data in real time to the Telemetry2U IoT platform. You can read more about this integration here.

Additional deployments include integration with the In-Situ RDO-X dissolved oxygen probe, demonstrating compatibility with complex RS485-based sensing equipment.

Monitoring and Control via Telemetry2U Once connected to Telemetry2U, data can be viewed in real time and analysed historically through configurable dashboards. Users can set up email, SMS, and voice call alerts to be notified when measurements exceed defined thresholds. With its Class-C operation, the RS485-LN remains responsive at all times, supporting remote control and command execution from a smartphone or PC.
